I sat in my car in the parking lot and loaded the tape.

Not the old voice I’d known near the end, the thin one that got stuck sometimes between words. This was her younger voice. Harder. What She Actually Said
I had to rewind it four times.
Not because the sound was bad. Because my brain kept refusing the information the way a drain refuses a clog.

Grandma Eleanor’s voice on that tape was measured, careful, the voice of a woman who had rehearsed this. She said she’d written it out first, the whole thing, on yellow legal paper, and then burned the paper in the kitchen sink because she was afraid someone would find it before she was ready.

The Letters
I opened them in my grandmother’s kitchen, at her table, under the light she’d had since 1987.
There were eleven letters from Gary. The earliest was dated about eight months after I was born. The latest was from six years ago.
He knew. He’d always known. He knew Diane had wanted to take me, knew Eleanor had intervened, knew the whole architecture of it. And his letters to his mother read like a man who’d found a way to be comfortable with something that should have kept him up nights. Asking about me sometimes. How I was doing in school. Whether I looked like my mother.
That last one made my stomach do something.
I set the letters down and picked up the hospital band.
It was small, the kind they put on newborns, white plastic with small black text. The name on it said Baby Girl Cobb. And under the standard fields, someone had written in pen, in handwriting I didn’t recognize: Nora. She decided on Nora.
Diane had named me before she left.
She’d named me and then someone had changed it.
Finding Her

I hired someone. A woman named Pat Sloan, who does this work professionally, locating people. She was matter-of-fact about it, no drama, asked me for what I had and told me she’d be in touch.
She was in touch in eleven days.
Diane Cobb, now Diane Ferris, was living in Asheville, North Carolina. She was sixty-one years old. She had remarried in 1998, a man named Doug. She had two kids with him, a son named Marcus and a daughter named Beth, both grown. She worked part-time at a garden center.
Pat sent me a photo. Recent, taken from what looked like a public Facebook page.
Diane Ferris was standing in front of a display of potted plants, holding a flat of marigolds, squinting a little in the sun. She had gray in her hair and she was wearing a green apron.
I looked at her face for a long time.

What I Know and Don’t Know
I haven’t contacted her yet.
I’ve written four emails and deleted all of them. I wrote a letter by hand and then didn’t mail it. I’ve picked up my phone in parking lots and grocery stores and set it back down.
I don’t know if she’s thought about me. I don’t know if she’s looked. I don’t know if she made peace with what happened or if it’s been a wound she’s been carrying around inside her second life, her real life, the one she built after Eleanor took her daughter away.
I don’t know if she knows Eleanor is dead.
I don’t know what she’ll do when a stranger calls her and says my name is Nora and I think I’m yours.
What I do know is this: I’m not angry at Eleanor the way I expected to be. I’ve been working on why that is. I think it’s because the tape didn’t sound like a woman making excuses. It sounded like a woman who’d spent thirty years knowing exactly what she’d done and not knowing how to undo it. She raised me with everything she had. She made me lunches and sat through my fevers and cut my hair badly and loved me in the most complete way she knew how.
And she also stole me.
Both things are true and I don’t have anywhere to put that yet.
The safe is still open on the closet floor. I haven’t closed it.
The yellow tape player is on the kitchen counter. I’ve listened to the recording nine times.
At the end, after everything else, after all the explaining, Eleanor goes quiet for a moment. You can hear the house. The specific quiet of that house, the refrigerator hum, the porch swing moving outside.
Then she says: “Her name was Nora. She wanted you to be Nora. I thought if I changed it, it would be easier. For me. I know that now.”
